Sweet Tea,Lovely group of friendsand Drama Dramatic story unveilsall while sippen on sweet tea Narrator did a fairly nice job Interesting clean story.. Favorite Quotes Maybe she wasn t qualified, maybe she couldn t do much, but the folk wielding power would have to flatten her if they wanted to pawn Ty and Katie off on Social Services I think that s what we all wantthan anything else in the world To belong to someone And to have someone who belongs to us he d done the gene pool a huge favor by eliminating someone so dumb Daddy always said there weren t room enough in the world for all the fools inhabiting it This time platitudes wouldn t work either If she d heard them once during and after her pregnancies, she d heard them a dozen times They re in heaven God much have needed themthan you and Matt It wasn t meant to be If she d believed that about God, she d have signed up for atheism so fast necks would have snapped The sapphires are for your eyes The diamonds for your heart, multifaceted, shining Mine My Review Five Stars is not a high enough rating for this marvelous book quality writing of this caliber calls for at least a double rating of 10 It was breathtaking I adored every sentence of this meticulously crafted story, and there was not a wasted word on the 403 superbly written pages The narrative was so descriptive and enthralling, I could hear the dog s bark, see and feel the lightning in the sky, and smell the water in the bay Ms Fischer s characters are appealing, knowable, clever, enticing, and expertly developed and detailed The story was deeply moving if not intoxicating, with numerous tragedies and losses that fathomed my emotions in a manner that had me in tears several times a remarkable achievement given my rather cold heart I ached for the little boy most of all, denied a childhood, yet ever insightful, aware, and protective of his family But my favorite character proved to be the unexpectedly complex policeman with a penchant for the finer things and excellent tastes in food, creature comforts, music, and the soft touches and kindnesses that were exactly what these broken people were in dire need of Heavy Weather is my first Normandie Fischer read, but it certainly will not be my last I hope she is busy working on a sequel as I am already in need of a return visit to Beaufort.
This novel has it all suspense, romance, small southern town charm, and a very real depiction of the dark side of family life Normandie Fischer is a wonderful voice in southern women s fiction Having read her debut, BECALMED, I knew this What I didn t expect was the raw and honest portrayal of domestic violence that sucked me into the story Normandie didn t sugarcoat the abuse, but she gave us such hope in what could have been a hopeless situation Her portrayal of the abuser, Roy, was utterly compelling When I discovered he loved to feed birds, I actually began hoping he could be redeemed If you want to get lost in a page turner with characters you ll love and hate this is the book for you I became so invested in the wellbeing of Annie Mac and her children that I found myself carrying the book around and reading in stolen moments, often with my heart racing I think this would be a great choice for a book club There s much to discuss. In Heavy Weather, Normandie Fisher has created a coastal Carolina setting so palpable you can almost smell the plough mud, as well as a cast of characters so touchingly authentic you ll want to invite them over for a barbecue Fisher takes the reader on an emotional journey that is both heartfelt and richly written as her characters stumble, sometimes grudgingly, toward healing and forgiveness A deep and lovely story about the unshakable bonds of friendship and the healing power of love. Heavy Weather Normandie FischerA very intense book featuring Annie Mac and her children Ty and Katie Annie Mac s ex husband Roy has beaten her and wants to take their daughter The story picks up speed and careens through the lives of the tight knit group of friends that take in Annie Mac and her kids Roy makes repeated attempts to steal Katie, no matter who gets in his way The suspense had me from start to finish I need to go back and get the first book in this series. The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed Laura Jennings gave a riveting performance I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator. This was a hard week s reading for me I had somehow ended up with two books dealing with domestic violence in quick succession It s odd how that happens sometimes When I accept books for review it s often months in advance and I have no idea how they really land in my schedule It s not an easy subject to read about.Heavy Weather tells the story of Annie Mac, a woman who has made some mistakes in her life but the greatest is marrying Roy, a very violent man He lives in a world all of his own and he is king of that world.Annie Mac is living in Beaufort, trying to make a life for herself and her two children when Roy comes barging in with fists flying He wants his daughter and he is not going to let anyone get in his way He leaves Annie in a bloody, broken pile but can t find Katie her older brother has hidden her well With her last conscious words Annie asks Hannah, a neighbor, to care for the kids until she s better This leads to a a circle of comfort that Annie could never have imagined. The book is told in alternating chapters this conceit is getting very old It seems most of the books I have read lately are doing this in the voices of different characters including Roy s In this manner the reader learns about the circle of people who are helping Annie Mac survive her attack and find Roy to make him face justice. She has trouble accepting and trusting at first but soon realizes that there is kindness in the world But Roy still lurks Will law enforcement get to him before he hurts Annie again This was a book full of friendship, love, suspense and relationships I am not usually drawn to this type of book but I found myself really enjoying this tale other than the alternating chapter thing It moved right along and the characters were well developed I d go back to Beaufort to revisit these characters again. In the next installment in the Carolina Coast series readers are reunited with characters from the other book, and meet new ones The storyline is focused on domestic violence, which for some may be hard to deal with, but stay with the story, it does have a positive ending.Annie Mac s husband has vowed he will get his baby girl from her, no matter what he has to do to achieve his goal Annie feels she has no one to turn to and feels her time is up Hannah Morgan comes across Annie Mac s children hiding in the bushes and Annie near death, Hannah s world went from quiet and orderly to noisy and unpredictable Hannah enlists the help of Clay, the local police lieutenant to locate the husband and bring him to justice before he can come back and finish what he started The saying, it takes a village to raise a child, also holds true in saving a child and her mother from a monster When the town works together with the plan they have worked out to capture the abuser, things work out better than any one could have imagined in spite of the problems along the way.I was given a free copy of the book in exchanged for my honest review. Normandie Fischer s Heavy Weather is Southern fiction so vivid the humidity dampens your skin and the characters breathe into life amidst its pages The writing is lyrical and lovely, touching on human emotion and hurt and, at times, the dark places we don t want to acknowledge The author doesn t pull punches, right away introducing readers to Annie Mac, a young woman trapped in domestic abuse, showing us its ugly repercussions in Annie Mac s life and the lives of her two young children Helpful neighbor Hannah and half a dozen friends and community workers in Beaufort, NC, come together in this story of second chances and forgiveness, sprinkled with a tense police investigation and unexpected love The author s awareness of, and sensitivity to, the complicated workings of the human heart, creates a story layered with deep emotion and complex characterization.Heavy Weather is a story to wrap yourself up in and savor, and one I highly recommend I look forward to readingof Normadie Fischer s stories.
