Greater Achievement And Responsibility I liked it as it confirms my thought some professionals are nuts That it isn t just me they think the rules don t apply to them Despite taking me forever to read, I enjoyed this book It was hard to pick up something so business oriented during the last part of the semester I had finals to get ready for and after they were over, I just wanted to zone out with easy reads This book has a lot of great points, though, in dealing with powerful people and is geared towards those in the workplace though it could be definitely be helpful for those involved in non profits and who serve on boards Schlimm does a nice job of interspersing his rules with stories from the field about Margaret Thatcher, Steve Jobs, and Colin Powell, just to name a few I ve highlighted a lot of things in this book and my husband wants to read it, as well As a brief summary, here are Schlimm s rules though really, he goes in to muchdepth in the book I especially liked the real world scenarios he has at the end of chapter and walks you through different ways to deal with them.1 Get ready for a potent mix of brilliance and drive2 Know how to manange the supremely confident3 Master the art of first impressions4 Know what you are doing5 Save energy for when it counts6 Practice humility7 Show appreciation8 Sidestep power with diplomacy9 Guard your independence10 Get results11 Cover their weaknesses12 Facilitate the impact of raw power13 Advise those who like to act14 Know when and whether to put the brakes on if you can15 Coach with caution16 Use your own power well17 Powerful people need people who don t need themI ve already tried a few out of these out at work and am sure this is a book I ll keep handy I do wish there was less of an emphasis of bowing to the powerful person s every whim although he does caution you to maintain your independence and integrity andof letting them feel the heat of their actions sometimes I understand that s not always how the real world works, but it felt like there was a lot of acquiesence being pushed It was a minor detraction since Schlimm had so many specific pieces of advice vs the general, non specific, common sense type of babble many mgmt books contain that made this worthwhile read. I have just won this book from First Reads I look forward to reading it Thanks. Great book on how to work for someone who d pass as a D in DiSC disc assessment, that is domineering, demanding, aggressive I really liked this book as a way to de stress from trying to deal with life in general This book is full of what could be considered common sense, if the advice weren t so uncommon.I thought it was creative how the chapters were lined and numbered as rules, which made them easier to remember and organize in my jumbled mind This really stood out to me, and made the book seem less like a book andlike a personal checklist for me to follow, which gives ainteractive feeling than would otherwise be created. However, while I do believe that I would be able to benefit greatly from the advice given in this book, I doubt I would be able to carry myself in the manner portrayed I am not as outgoing as I would like to be, and though there were various detailed scenarios listed and explained, I find myself unable to fully connect A person who could follow the exact advice listed in this book would practically be perfect obviously, everyone wants to be perfect , but I don t really think it s completely realistic for someone like me.Still, I m sure I will be able to improve myself through some of the practical advice given throughout the pages of this book, so I look forward to the next opportunity to use these wise words. Thanks very much to the First Reads program and the generous author and publishers who made it possible for me to receive a free copy of this great book I won a free copy of this book from Goodreads I can t wait to receive and read it Thank you.
